I've spent 15 years investigating things that don't add up. This isn't one of them.

I'm Nic. I'm an Oxford graduate, Big 4 partner. I've spent the past 15 years building a career in risk, compliance and fraud investigation. I've done all the things I was meant to do. Last year, I did something unexpected.I became an independent travel business owner.Let me explain.I love to travel, but we were part way through an expensive home renovation project and travel was quickly falling down the priority list.I followed a lot of home accounts on Instagram and one day a woman behind an account I followed and trusted shared that they had joined an online travel platform which enabled them to earn commission back on everything they booked. And I mean everything - hotels, cruises, packages, flights, villas, cottages, ferries, ski trips, sports packages, car hire, travel insurance, airport lounges & parking, event tickets, attractions, theatre tickets - it goes on!

What I looked into before I said yesI was interested, but also very sceptical (occupational hazard!) So I did what I do professionally - I learned everything I could. I asked questions, read the detail, and looked for the gaps. I even wrote a nerdy memo of pros, cons and risks.I decided to sign up. Here's what sold it to me:

  • People I know travel all the time. I could earn commission helping them to book trips they were already going to take without it costing them a penny - a total win-win.

  • There was a low entry cost with a 30-day money back guarantee. It was genuinely low financial risk for me to get into the systems and test them properly.

  • There were no targets, no minimum sales, and no one to answer to. I could pick it up and put it down as I pleased.

  • The platform, trade relationships and support were legitimate and established. This wasn't something I needed to build out for myself - it was essentially a business in a box.

What I know now after a yearTravel commissions are already baked into pretty much any price people are paying online, even when they're booking themselves. On average these work out around 10-15%.This means that there is serious money to be made in travel. When you become an agent, you get a cut of this commission, which is pretty great. It starts at a 70% cut and rises to 80% as you book more.As a self-confessed control freak, it surprised me to learn how many people choose to book through an agent. But they really do.This shows in our travel booking stats. In 2025, my team booked over £7m of travel and we're already at £6m in travel bookings for 2026.Our customers like the human touch and are really happy with the service we provide. We're rated 4.9 on Trustpilot (better than most of the big booking sites). As well as booking travel, there's also an option to earn by helping others get started with their own travel businesses. This is something I came to later once I'd got my head around travel booking. I have a cruise mad auntie who was keen to get her own account, and it grew from there. I found it a natural fit for me as I do a lot of mentoring and coaching professionally. Using these skills to help myself and others earn was another win-win for me.

Who I think this works forIf you travel in the UK and abroad or know people who do, this business has a lot to offer. It allows you to access super deals and competitive rates and generate extra income. But, having helped over 100 people get started with their own travel accounts now, it works better for some people than others. It doesn't suit people who want passive income from day one or to replace their salary overnight. The potential to generate a meaningful income is real, but this isn't a get rich quick scheme. If that's what you're after, look elsewhere (and do let me know if you find it!!).It takes effort, especially at the start. The systems are straightforward and the training is designed to fit around a busy life, but it's not zero effort. If you're not willing to put in the groundwork, this isn't for you.The people who do well in this business are busy but motivated, they look for solutions rather than getting stuck on a problem, they're self starters but they know they can ask for help when they need it.They want want a flexible income that fits around a full life rather than taking it over. They're financially motivated but not desperate. Ambitious, but not in a rush. They're open to building something quietly, on their own terms. If that sounds like you, this is worth a serious look.
